major, the other minor. Traffic on the major road has priority; traffic on the minor road must give way. Road signs: red-bordered warning triangles tell you that you\u2019re approaching a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 junction<br \/>2. Road markings: you\u2019ll see them on the left of the road ahead<br \/>3. Buildings: a gap in a row of buildings could indicate a junction<br \/>4. Parked cars: a gap in a row of parked cars could indicate a junction<br \/>5. Moving cars: cars emerging from the left could indicate a junction<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row section vc_row-fluid \"><div class=\" full_section_inner clearfix\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_empty_space\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row section vc_row-fluid \"><div class=\" full_section_inner clearfix\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-4\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper vc_box_shadow_3d  vc_box_border_grey\">Mirrors \u2022 Signal \u2022 Position \u2022 Speed \u2022 Look (MSPSL routine)<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-8\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>When you\u2019ve spotted the junction at which you want to turn left, follow the MSPSL routine.<\/p><p><em>Mirrors<\/em><\/p><ul><li>Look into your rear-view mirror and left side mirror (shows you what\u2019s happening behind you and on your left side).<\/li><\/ul><p><em>Signal<\/em><\/p><ul><li>In towns, make your signalling clear. If you signal your intention to turn left too early, people may think you\u2019re pulling over to stop. If you signal too late, other drivers won\u2019t have time to react. Be guided by your speed. If you\u2019re travelling at 30mph, six car lengths is about right; at 10\u201315mph, two car lengths is more appropriate.<\/li><\/ul><p><em>Position<\/em><\/p><ul><li>Take a safe driving line \u2013 about 1 metre from the kerb. That gives other drivers a chance to pass on your right. It also confirms to other drivers that you intend to turn left.<\/li><\/ul><p><em>Speed<\/em><\/p><ul><li>Your speed should be neither too slow nor too fast. Adjust it by easing off the accelerator and gentle use of the foot brake.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>If you go too fast, you\u2019ll struggle to get round the corner \u2013 you may end up on the wrong side of the road.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>If you go too slow, you\u2019ll encourage other drivers to overtake you close to a junction, which could be dangerous.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The gear you choose depends on how much you can see into the minor road and how sharp the turn is. As a general rule, the sharper the bend, the lower the gear. Whichever gear you choose, engage the clutch at least one car length from the corner. Avoid coasting.<\/li><\/ul><p><em>Look<\/em><\/p><ul><li>Take a final look into the left side mirror to check for cyclists.<\/li><li>Look as far as you can into the road you are about to turn into. Look for emerging traffic, obstructions, and pedestrians.
