At Wimbledon Driving School<\/a>, we want to do everything we can to help our pupils succeed on their driving test.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We believe there are nine key things all learner drivers should do to maximise their chances of passing their test first time \u2013 they may seem basic, but it\u2019s crucial not to forget them! Have a read to ensure that your driving test can go as smoothly as possible\u2026<\/p>\n

Weeks before the test:<\/h2>\n

1 \u2013 Practise outside of your lessons<\/strong>
\nOn your driving lessons, your instructor teaches you everything you need to know about driving safely and how to pass your test. However, a two hour lesson per week isn\u2019t enough to get everything feeling like second nature \u2013 after all, practice makes perfect.<\/p>\n

Ask an eligible friend or relative to supervise your driving outside of lessons, so you can get that perfect parallel park.<\/p>\n

2 \u2013 Practise outside of your comfort zone<\/strong>
\nIt may be tempting just to practise on the routes your instructor takes you on, or the ones you know the test centre use. But while that quiet cul-de-sac is perfect for turning in the road<\/a>, it\u2019s important to get used to roads you don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

The more road types and conditions you know, the better you can react to an unexpected situation while driving. Remember, once you pass your test, you won\u2019t just be sticking to those few square miles\u2026<\/p>\n

3 \u2013 Practise in different conditions<\/strong>
\nYou should feel comfortable driving, whatever the weather. Practise on the scorching summer\u2019s day, practise through that torrential downpour \u2013 practise, practise, practise!<\/p>\n

Booking on a lovely spring afternoon may seem like a good idea at the time\u2026 until the April Showers come. Don\u2019t risk being caught out by changing weather conditions.<\/p>\n

Days before the test:<\/h2>\n

4 \u2013 Revise your <\/strong>Highway Code<\/a>
\nYou\u2019ve passed your theory, so you don\u2019t need your Highway Code anymore, right? Wrong. You may not need to read it cover to cover, but brush up on road signs and anything you\u2019re unsure of.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t let unnecessary uncertainty creep into your test.<\/p>\n

5 \u2013 Have a mock test with your instructor<\/strong>
\nBy having your instructor take you on a mock test, you can familiarise yourself with the style of test and the things that could be asked of you in it.<\/p>\n

6 \u2013 Go for a warm up drive<\/strong>
\nHave a drive to warm up just before your test \u2013 by not going in cold, you will relax slightly before embarking on the test, which can only be a good thing.<\/p>\n

During your test:<\/h2>\n

7 \u2013 Stay calm<\/strong>
\nDon\u2019t tell everyone you\u2019re having your driving test \u2013 this piles unnecessary expectation and pressure on you. Do not listen to everyone\u2019s horror stories about how they failed their tests \u2013 why let other people\u2019s mistakes affect your performance?<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t rush through the test \u2013 take your time. Also get to the test centre in plenty of time so again, you can familiarise yourself and relax.<\/p>\n

8 \u2013 Listen carefully<\/strong>
\nListen to everything your driving examiner says \u2013 you don\u2019t want to make a mistake just because you misheard the instruction. Don\u2019t feel uncomfortable about asking them to repeat an instruction \u2013 they would much rather repeat what they said than you do something completely different and potentially fail the test.<\/p>\n

9 \u2013 Dress comfortably<\/strong>
\nThis includes shoes. A driving test isn\u2019t an interview, nor is it a catwalk. Whatever you usually drive in, if that\u2019s comfortable for you, wear it. You won\u2019t get marked down for wearing trackies and trainers.<\/p>\n
